Reading Tips
Students learn to read slowly, and then suddenly, they seem to take off like a rushing waterfall. Each child learns on their own time, however I must follow Wake County quarterly guidelines.
Here are a few tips:
- Make reading a fun and relaxing time.
- Have a fun designated place in a room with pillows or a tent-like atmosphere
- Try to read before bedtime together.
- It is also great to read to your child. This expands vocabulary and they hear the rhythm of reading.
- When you have a busy schedule, have your child read during the car ride.
- Make frequent trips to the Wake County Libraries. My personal favorite authors for First Graders are:
Chapter books: Magic Tree House (also great read aloud to your child) Mary Pope Osborne, Cam Jensen series by Susanna Natti, C.S. Lewis (Narnia series)also great read alouds, Noodles series by Hans Wilhem
Read books anywhere: in the car, outside, in a blanket fort, in a tent, under the table, read billboards, signs, etc.
RazKids, Wise Owl, Tumblebooks, Storyline Online, Brainpop Jr.
Writing
We write about everything! We write true stories, stories we make up, use characters, setting, problem and solutions, opinions, narratives, non-fiction/informative, How to's, and poems.
At home, make writing a fun activity with lots of markers, pens, pencils, colored pencils. Use a special notebook, mini notebooks, shopping lists, writing paper, paper to write letters, etc. If you have space, attach a whiteboard to your child's playroom wall with dry-erase markers. Have a blast with writing!
